"Many citizens remain confined to their homes due to the pandemic. Additionally, some homeowners have chosen to maximise their backyard space by constructing an outdoor office or reorganizing their shed. Justin Conway, project coordinator at Ralmax Group of Companies in Victoria, discusses a current trend.
Justin Conway confirms that his sector of the construction industry has continued to operate despite the health crisis: "Things have continued to move forward, but it is true that work was significantly more complicated due to the increased precautions."
The project coordinator establishes a link between the pandemic and the increased demand for garden offices following a year of confinement. This year, we're seeing an increase in demand, whether it's from homeowners looking to add an office or from landowners looking to add a small shed for retirement and relaxation."
Q) How would you describe the quality of the materials & craftsmanship?
A) When it came, I was flabbergasted. The fact that it wasn’t OSB but was plywood, the thickness of the walls, the pine you use on the exterior being 1 ½” thick, how tight and sealed it was, and easy and efficient. Understanding all that is why I strongly suggested that my daughter build her house through you guys, because I’ve never seen a pre-fab that’s built so well. The construction was way beyond what my expectations were.
Q) What would you say was the most challenging part of the process?
A) To be truthful, we really enjoyed the process. Nesmaker made the process very nice because we could modify the plan. There wasn’t really anything difficult about understanding how to put it together – it was all described in the manual. I don’t think there was one particular thing that was difficult about the process. Maybe taking the time to make decisions instead of flying by the seat of my pants might have made it a bit better, but we’re really happy with the product. In the whole building process, the most difficult aspect was putting the septic tank in since we did it ourselves, but that has nothing to do with the cabin. I guess the most challenging part of the cabin build was figuring out the stairs. We had a difficult corner to deal with and we were trying to decide what we wanted to do with the finish of them, so we kind of made that up as we went along.

Q) Describe the process of designing and building your own home. Was it rewarding to see the design come to life?
A) To see our home, our dream come to life actually brought tears to my eyes some days, we were doing it finally!
Q) Describe the quality of the materials and craftsmanship of Nestmaker.
A) The quality of the pine is amazing, I love seeing all the little knots come out as the years go on. We’ve been living in our cabin since December 2018 and have not had any issues with any of the material, I would say the quality exceeds our expectations.

A) Jump in, the journey is so worth the time life gives us!
Q) What made you decide to transition from a 2,000 sq ft home in the city to a 700 sq ft cabin in the mountains, and how would you describe the transition?
A) Our passion the last 10 years was to live somewhere we could be sustainable, build our own home, and somewhat live off grid. Here we are, we took the plunge and moved from Fort McMurray Alberta to a beautiful little “city” named Greenwood in BC. We’re up 3500 feet living on a mountain with only one neighbour, it’s beautiful.
